Baby product safety standards under review by ministry, says Fuziah

KUALA LUMPUR: A set standard for disposable diapers and other baby products will be developed in the near future, according to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

Deputy Minister Fuziah Salleh (pic) stated that the current safety standards for baby diapers include Sirim, the Medical Device Authority, and 13 other agencies.

However, she acknowledged that the existing safety standards for baby diapers have "a lot of overlaps and also gaps."

She was responding to Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) during the minister's question and answer session on Wednesday (Feb 26), who inquired about the ministry's actions regarding concerns about baby diapers with hazardous chemicals and plans to establish stricter safety standards for baby products.

Fuziah mentioned that the ministry will begin engaging with all agencies, including the Health Ministry and Chemistry Department, to set safety standards for other baby products, including disposable diapers.

She also noted that the ministry has developed standards related to baby toys, especially concerning paint for toys, as some paints can be toxic.

"Children may chew on the toy, which can expose them to toxic substances in the paint. Those items will be listed as unsafe," she said.

Since 2015, there have been only four complaints regarding disposable diaper products related to counterfeit, expired products, and causing rashes.
