KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed forced displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip is “beyond rational thought”, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic).
The Foreign Minister said Malaysia strongly disagrees with any move that goes against international laws.
“Malaysia truly regrets the announcement. It is against all international conventions, charters and treaties,” he said during the Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
He was responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN- Paya Besar), who had asked the minister to state Malaysia’s stand on the recent announcement to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza.On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said the “United States will take over the Gaza Strip”, shortly after proposing the permanent resettlement of Palestinians outside the enclave, with the aim of creating economic development.
Mohamad said he had discussed the matter with Asean counterparts who also disagreed with the proposal.
“We will issue a joint statement after receiving consensus from all members. However, for Malaysia, we strongly oppose any suggestion that doesn’t make sense to remove Palestinians from their homeland and place them in a third country,” he said.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul acknowledged the urgency for Malaysia to address the issue.
In a statement, Wisma Putra said such inhumane actions constitute ethnic cleansing and are clear violations of international law and multiple United Nations resolutions.
“Any attempt, whether direct or indirect, to unilaterally and forcefully impose solutions that disregard the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and infringes on their freedom is unacceptable, unjustifiable and will only further deepen one of the longest conflicts in the region,” it said.
The ministry said the international community must unite in calling for a credible and permanent solution that is acceptable to the Palestinians, which is in regard to the Resolution of the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit 2024, adopted on Nov 11, 2024.“This is for all nations that have yet to support the two-state solution to do so, to recognise Palestine and for it to be accepted as a full member of the UN.
“Malaysia reaffirms its support and multilateral efforts, including those being undertaken by the Global Alliance and the Hague Group, in pursuing lasting peace through the establishment of an independent and sovereign state of Palestine,” it said.
