PETALING JAYA: The government should consider extending the threshold for e-invoicing implementation for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Ayer Hitam MP said the current threshold of RM150,000 was good, but the government should consider increasing this threshold to those with annual sales turnover of below RM500,000.
"I urge the government to consider exemptions for MSMEs and any B2C (business-to-consumer) enterprises with an annual sales turnover of below RM500,000 from the implementation of e-invoicing," the MCA president said during the debate on the motion of thanks on the royal address in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 6).
During the debate, Dr Wee also said he sympathised with MSMEs who will face a rise in electricity tariffs on July 1, 2025, on top of e-invoicing issues.
"Although the government has said that MSMEs will continue to be protected, what I think we can do is to control the increase in electricity tariffs," the MCA president said.
Dr Wee said that the government had announced a 14.2% increase in electricity tariffs from July 1, 2025.
"Even though 85% are said to be not directly affected by the increase, we must understand that when production costs increase, the manufacturer's profit margin will decrease," he said.
"Ultimately, the consumer will bear the cost. So, I ask that the government reduce the surcharge related to MSMEs using a moderate electricity supply to reduce the burden of increased costs," he said in his speech.
Dr Wee also pointed out that neighbouring countries Thailand and Singapore had reduced their electricity tariffs, citing that the cost of fuel had decreased since 2022.
