BUKIT MERTAJAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reassured the people that Malaysia's fuel supply is sufficient until July, amid the global energy crisis sparked by the Middle East conflict.
He said the government has managed to ensure the country has enough petrol and diesel thanks to Malaysia's good relations with Iran, including diplomatic cooperation that has helped the country's ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
"Malaysia's diplomatic relations with Iran are not only based on humanity and solidarity against the attacks by Israel, but also benefit the security of the country's energy supply.
"This evening (Tuesday, May 26) at 6pm, the Iranian President (Masoud Pezeshkian) will contact me by phone.
"Our (Malaysia’s) good relations with other countries has helped ensure a stable fuel supply despite global challenges affecting shipping routes and oil transportation.
"When difficulties arose involving passage through the Strait of Hormuz, Malaysia was among one of the earlier countries able to secure clearance for its ships, allowing oil shipments to continue through," he said in an impromptu speech here after presenting sacrificial cows for Aidiladha to communities in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary and Seberang Jaya state constituencies.
On the situation in other countries, Anwar recalled seeing long queues at petrol stations while attending an Asean-related event in Cebu, the Philippines, with several stations reportedly forced to close temporarily.
"Malaysia has not reached that stage," he said.
Anwar acknowledged that global uncertainties have led to rising costs, particularly involving shipping insurance and freight charges linked to passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which in turn contributed to slight increases in the prices of goods.
"Despite this we (the government) maintained the price of RON95 fuel.
"As long as we can afford it, RON95 will remain at RM1.99.
"Malaysia is one of the countries that managed to offer fuel at some of the cheapest rates in the region.
"When it comes to diesel subsidies, we (the government) continue to provide assistance and initiatives under the Madani framework for farmers, fishermen, tractor operators, buses, school buses and the transportation sector," he added.
He said, however, that the measures might still not be enough as the country continues to face economic pressures.
"I am hopeful that the people’s spirit would help the nation weather the challenges together.
“What is the meaning of life if we do not face both good and difficult times together," he said.
