JOHOR BARU: A tailor’s assistant was fined RM4,000 for posting a seditious comment intended to insult the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The accused, Norli Mohamed Yusof, 53, pleaded guilty after the charge was read before Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail at the Sessions Court here on Tuesday (Feb 4).
Following the plea, Judge Ahmad Kamal imposed a RM4,000 fine and ordered that the accused serve a six-month jail sentence if she failed to pay the fine.
The mother of five was charged under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both upon conviction.
According to the charge sheet, the accused posted a comment containing words intended to insult the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on a Facebook account under the name "Nori Norli."
The offence was committed in Bandar Seri Alam at around 2pm on Dec 11, 2024.
Based on the case facts, a complainant saw a photo post on a Facebook account showing His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim having lunch at a popular asam pedas restaurant here.
The complainant noticed a seditious comment insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong posted by the accused’s Facebook account and lodged a police report at the Seri Alam police station.
Further investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) revealed that the Facebook account "Nori Norli" was registered under the phone number of the accused’s daughter.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutors Abdul Ghafar Ab Latif and Lydia Salleh, while the accused was represented by lawyers K Bharathi and P Rajagunaseelan.
