National junior shuttler Chong Lee Qian is embracing the pressure of being among the favourites at the Lee Chong Wei (LCW) Cup, with his eye on the tournament’s RM5,000 prize money as an added boost to his title pursuit.
The reigning Junior Elite Tour Finals champion underlined his credentials with a convincing 15-4, 15-3 victory over Saw Kai Jiun at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara, on Tuesday (Sept 1) to advance in the boys’ under-17 category.
Lee Qian, who joined the national set-up earlier this year, said he was trying not to be weighed down by expectations.
“There is some pressure, but I try to relax, enjoy the game and play every shot well,” he said.
While success on court remains the priority, the teenager admitted that the prize money also gives players an extra reason to push themselves.
“RM5,000 is quite a lot for a teenager,” said Lee Qian.
“When the prize money is bigger, you have more fighting spirit to win it.”
Meanwhile, 13-year-old Shahadzryl Suhaime continued his strong run in the boys’ under-13 category by defeating Yeo Shi Yao 15-10, 15-13.
However, the Bukit Jalil Sports School prospect was not entirely satisfied with his performance.
“I played better in my first two matches,” said Shahadzryl.
“My speed wasn’t up to the mark and I know I could have done better.”
The avid Chong Wei fan also has ambitious long-term goals, including going one better than his idol’s three Olympic silver medals.
“My ultimate goal is to become an Olympic champion. But before that, I want to become Asian Junior champion and World Junior champion first.”
