Floods: Only nine districts left affected as Sandakan closes its relief centre

KOTA KINABALU: Sandakan district deactivated its only temporary relocation centre at Masjid Nur Iman, Kampung Sungai Memanjang on Friday (Jan 31) at 1pm, reducing the number of flood-affected districts in Sabah from 10 to nine.

The state disaster management committee secretariat shared in a statement that as of 8pm, 5,195 flood victims are still housed in 33 shelters across the nine locations.

Earlier in the day, the number of displaced victims had increased from the previous night, with 5,725 individuals recorded in 41 shelters across 10 districts.

However, throughout the day, eight shelters were deactivated in stages as flood victims were allowed to return home after their villages were declared safe and water levels receded.

Beluran closed two shelters at Kg Balaban Jaya mini hall and Kg Sungai Nangka hall at 11am, while the Kampung Lentigi hall shelter in Kota Belud was closed at 2.50pm.

Three temporary relocation centres in Telupid district, namely Kg Kiabau hall, Kg Maau multipurpose hall, and Kg Bauto hall, were all deactivated at 3pm, while Paitan closed its shelter at Sekolah Kebangsaan Lubang Buaya at 3pm as well.
