KUALA LUMPUR: The police will review several criminal laws to ensure they remain relevant to current times.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, at a special media briefing on Monday (Jan 27), said: "The police can only operate within the parameters established by law. I have proposed that this year we examine laws we consider outdated so that they can be elevated to the ministerial level to “sharpen” their effectiveness.

"Among the laws we have introduced include the Common Gaming Houses Act, which the government is still examining for its application. The gambling landscape has evolved drastically.”.
He noted that, although it is accurate to state that the act of gambling itself falls under the jurisdiction of the police, there are also other factors associated with gambling that fall under different ministries and jurisdictions.
"In the context of family entertainment centres and interactive entertainment centres, different states have different enactments. So, in dealing with gambling issues, this is a barrier for the police as well.
"Also, gambling has now gone into the cyber world, which is far more challenging for the police because it has no borders," he said.
