KUALA LUMPUR: An internal audit led by Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain will be conducted to study last year's crime statistics.

In a special briefing with the media, Comm Shuhaily said he would go through the statistics and see if they tally with public perception.

"This audit team will (look into) the increases or decreases in the crime index to see if it is relevant to the perception of the people," he said here on Monday (Jan 27).

He added that this was not a way to punish but rather to ensure that investigating officers at state and district level are responsible for their respective crime indexes.

"They will need to explain the statistics, the actions taken and their plans to reduce the crime rate," he said.

The audit report would then be forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police and brought to the country's policymakers, he added.
