Johor cops to focus on 49 traffic, 31 accident hotspots over CNY

JOHOR BARU: Johor police have identified 49 hotspots for traffic congestion, including the two land checkpoints with Singapore, for the Chinese New Year period.

State police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said authorities were expecting an increase of between 10% and 15% in the number of vehicles on major roads and highways in Johor during the festive season.

“Under Ops Selamat from Tuesday (Jan 28) until Sunday (Feb 2), a total of 1,767 police officers and personnel including 636 traffic police officers and personnel will be on duty.

“The focus locations will be at our country's land border checkpoints at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) here and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) in Iskandar Puteri,” he said after a road safety programme at the Kempas toll (northbound) on the North-South Expressway here on Monday (Jan 27).

Comm Kumar said 31 black spots for road accidents had also been identified and would be a main focus of the police.

"I urge road users travelling with their family members and loved ones to always adhere to the road rules and practise patience while driving.

“The police will be present to ensure a safe Chinese New Year celebration for all,” he said.

He also advised those returning to their home towns to notify the police so their homes would be safeguarded from break-ins.
