JS-SEZ implementation stage begins with joint meeting next week

JOHOR BARU: Members of the Johor government will meet their Singapore counterparts next week to discuss the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

State investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han (pic, below) said the scheduled meeting comes about a week after the JS-SEZ agreement was signed by Malaysia and Singapore on Jan 7.

“The planning stages are over and we are now going into the implementation stage.

“It will be our first meeting with Singapore (following the signing) for implementation efforts including pulling in investors and joint action events," he told the press after a green energy event at a hotel here on Tuesday (Jan 14).

He said Johor government agencies would then hold a workshop on Thursday (Jan 16) on the implementation of the overall JS-SEZ masterplan.

Lee said that as part of the JS-SEZ, Johor aims to leverage green energy to maintain its competitive edge and support high-energy industries such as data centres, manufacturing centres and industrial parks.

“This commitment is not just about economic growth but creating a sustainable and resilient economy for future generations.

“By integrating renewable energy into the fabric of the JS-SEZ, we aim to set a benchmark for how special economic zones can drive sustainable growth and regional cooperation,” he added.

On Jan 7, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Singapore counterpart Lawrence Wong witnessed the exchange of the joint agreement, which took place during the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Putrajaya.
