MMEA rescues 14 crew members from burning tanker off Tg Piai

JOHOR BARU: Fourteen crew members of a tanker that caught fire four nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Piai have been rescued by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Johor MMEA acting director Maritime Captain Kama Azri Kamil said the Mongolia-registered tanker was manned by 15 crew members aged between 22 and 73 years old.

"We managed to rescue 14 of the crew members, who are from Myanmar, Indonesia, and Singapore.

"Unfortunately, one of them was swept into Singapore waters.

"However, Singaporean authorities reported that they found the victim," he said in a statement here.

He said that the man, who is an Indonesian, was found unconscious and was taken to a hospital for further treatment.

"The fire has been fully contained, and no oil spills were detected," he said, adding that the search and rescue operation was launched at about 9.25am on Sunday (Jan 12).
