‘Report misleading advertisements,’ urged Advertising Standards Malaysia to public

PETALING JAYA: The Advertising Standards Malaysia (Asa) is urging members of the public to report misleading advertisements to the organisation.

Asa, said its chairman Datuk Mah Weng Kwai, has been working to raise public awareness.

“...(It) has developed an advertising campaign to inform consumers that it safeguards them by ensuring that the rules in the Malaysian Code of Advertising Practice are adhered to.

“With this campaign, we hope to be able to create awareness on consumer rights and self-regulation and in the process, help promote the marketing communication industry as a more responsible and credible industry amongst the public vis-à-vis the Code,” he said.

Formed in 1977, Asa is an independent body that ensures the self-regulating Advertising industry adheres to the Malaysian Code of Advertising Practice in the print, outdoor, and cinema media while setting industry standards for legal, decent, honest, and truthful advertisements.

It comprises representatives from the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia, Malaysian Advertisers Association, Malaysian Newspaper Publishers Association, Media Specialists Association, and Outdoor Advertising Association of Malaysia.

Its activities include investigating complaints, mediation, as well as updating the Code with amendments and improvements to meet the changing values and needs of society and to protect consumer rights.
