Festive visit for army veteran who gave it his all

MELAKA: A military veteran from the Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir received an early Christmas surprise when local leaders visited his home.

The visit, initiated by Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, aimed to extend festive greetings to 86-year-old Luke Lowe @ Norman Lowe on Thursday night.Khoo said Lowe had dedicated his life to defending the country during the communist insurgency.

“I am here with other local leaders to honour the significant contribution of one of our veterans who played a vital role in combating the communist threat and ensuring the safety of our nation.

“This visit also serves as a gesture of gratitude to all our veterans for their unwavering commitment to our country.

“To all of our veterans, we are eternally grateful for your service to the nation,” Khoo said.

He shared that Lowe served in the military for over two decades, beginning in 1958.

Khoo said Lowe’s starting salary was just RM50 when he enlisted in the Army at the age of 20, yet he remained determined to defend the nation.

“He also served in several states and was deployed on a United Nations peacekeeping mission to Congo in the 1960s,” he said.

Khoo further highlighted Lowe’s recognition, stating that the veteran received the Bintang Cemerlang Melaka (BCM) in conjunction with Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam’s birthday in August.

“He also received recognition from the Armed Forces recently.

“We cannot forget the service and sacrifice of our nation’s military veterans as they enabled us and our future generations to enjoy the freedom we have today,” he said.
