KOTA KINABALU: A Bailey bridge will be built in two to three weeks to temporarily replace the existing bridge at Tanjung Lipat in Likas here, which was deemed unsafe for use last week.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam (pic) said installation work on the Bailey bridge is being undertaken at the damaged bridge site at KM2.85 of Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen.
“Based on current progress at the site, the installation process of the Bailey bridge is expected to take around two to three weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions and technical factors at the location,” Dr Gunsalam, who is the state Public Works and Utilities Minister, said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 5).
He urged the public to remain patient and comply with instructions and safety signs provided throughout the construction period.
Dr Joachim said his ministry, together with the Sabah Public Works Department, will ensure the temporary bridge construction is completed as quickly as possible for the benefit and safety of all road users.
“Thank you for the cooperation and patience of all parties. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” he said.
Since the closure of the section of the road involving the bridge, traffic congestion in and out of the city has been seen throughout the day.
