Tragic end: The car used in the drag race that killed the driver, being towed away.

KOTA KINABALU: A driver was killed in an accident during a drag race.

Abang Adib Abang Ali, 36, a Brunei national, crashed at a race circuit at 4.44pm on Saturday in Sabah’s east coast Sandakan district.

“Our initial probe found that the driver, who was participating in a drag race, lost control of his vehicle after going past the finishing line,” Sandakan acting police chief Supt Ramasamy Kuppan said.

“The vehicle crashed to the left side of the circuit, resulting in the man being trapped in it,” he said in a statement.

Supt Ramasamy said the incident took place at the Sandakan Turf Club, off Mile 5.

“Firemen helped free the man before he was rushed to the Duchess of Kent Hospital but he succumbed to serious injuries at 5.25pm,” he added.

It is learnt that the car spun several times in the air before coming to a halt.

In an unrelated case, a pedestrian was killed on the spot after being hit by car in Jalan Coastal here at 2.38am yesterday.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda said the man, in his 30s, was flung to the top of the car after impact.

He said the car driver, also in his 30s, was travelling on the right lane heading to Tanjung Aru when the pedestrian suddenly darted across the road.

“As a result of the collision, the pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene by a medical officer later,” he said.
