Anwar calls for peaceful transition of power in Syria


KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for unity in addressing challenges in Syria, advocating for a peaceful transition free of sectarian divides.

“Rebuilding Syria requires unity and a shared commitment to peace,” said the Prime Minister.

He raised the importance of fostering a multipolar world that promotes equity and justice, urging leaders to translate dialogue into tangible actions.

“This gathering is a call to action. It is an opportunity to deepen partnerships and reaffirm our collective commitment to peace and justice,” he said at the opening ceremony of the Strategic Vision Group: Russia-Islamic World here on Wednesday (Dec 11).

He added that Malaysia is monitoring developments in Syria on a daily basis.

"We call for peaceful transition that respects various communities. Sectarian divides must be rejected, and unity must be embraced as the guiding principle for rebuilding the nation. We have a duty to support

an independent and united Syria," said Anwar.

Syria's opposition militias - led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel group - overthrew president Bashar al-Assad in a shockingly fast takeover after 13 years of civil war. Assad and his family fled to Russia.
