Serdang Heart Centre’s operating theatres back in full operation, Parliament told

KUALA LUMPUR: Full operations have resumed at the operating theatres in Hospital Sultan Idris Shah's Heart Centre in Serdang, says Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

The Deputy Health Minister said the maintenance and repair, including upgrade works, were completed on Aug 15.

He said this in response to queries from Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong) regarding the malfunction of four operating theatres at the heart centre in Hospital Sultan Idris Shah in Serdang.

"The heart centre's construction project was declared complete on Sept 24, 2022, with a Defects Liability Period (DLP) lasting two years until Sept 24, 2024.

"The Public Works Department (JKR) was responsible for managing the construction and contracts," he said during the question-and-answer time at Parliament on Monday (Nov 4).

Lukanisman noted that the Health Ministry acknowledged a power supply disruption in July had affected several locations of the hospital, including the surgery hall.

"The JKR and the project contractor were promptly informed, and immediate action was taken to identify and resolve the issues, which originated from the wiring, electrical and air conditioning systems.

"Maintenance and repair work, including upgrades to the main wiring system, supporting electrical systems and air conditioning was completed on Aug 15.

"The affected operating theatres are now fully operational," he said.

He added that JKR and the hospital's maintenance company will continue monitoring the situation to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

On May 14, The Star reported that the four operating theatres at the Pusat Jantung Hospital Serdang (Serdang Heart Centre) could not be used due to maintenance issues.

The heart centre is located in the Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang.

After about a month following repairs done to its four non-functional operating theatres and surgery rooms, it was reported that the heart centre's new wing’s operating theatres had to be closed for three weeks due to multiple electrical issues.
