KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says a special parliamentary sitting to debate the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) will be held on Aug 11.
He said the matter had been discussed with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.
“The report will be tabled in Parliament on Aug 11 at 10am, and the sitting will continue until the afternoon,” he told reporters after opening Maybank’s new headquarters at Menara Merdeka Maybank yesterday.
Anwar also said TH had been successfully restored after problems arising from past negligence and mismanagement were detected early.
He said TH had long served as a key Islamic financial institution responsible for managing the haj pilgrimage for Malaysians.
“Alhamdulillah, the problems were detected early and we managed to restore the institution. I am confident Tabung Haji will continue to excel,” he said in a Bernama report.
The RCI report, released on Wednesday, recommended a forensic audit into past investment decisions that led to a severe deterioration in TH’s asset value.
The report, which investigated the management and operations of TH between 2014 and 2020, identified several problematic investments that warrant forensic examination.
The commission also found evidence of suspicious transactions and the concealment of information.
Meanwhile, a special task force has been set up to review and examine the findings of the RCI report on TH’s possible offences, including corruption, criminal breach of trust, document forgery, abuse of power and money laundering.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said its Senior Director of Investigation Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar has been appointed to head the task force.
The task force will examine whether any legal issues arising from the report fall under the MACC Act 2009, the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 or any other relevant laws.
“The MACC is committed to ensuring that every issue raised in the report is thoroughly examined, and should any breach of the law be identified, firm action will be taken regardless of the position or background of the individuals involved,” it said in a statement.
