PAC reviewing progress of Tabung Haji RCI recommendations

KUALA LUMPUR: Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has begun proceedings to review the progress in implementing recommendations from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH).

Its chairman Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the nearly four-hour proceedings involved the senior deputy secretary-general of the Prime Minister's Department, which oversees LTH, as well as the institution's chief executive officer and senior management.

She said the proceedings sought updates on the implementation of recommendations in the RCI report on LTH's management and operations from 2014 to 2020, tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Aug 11.

"This includes issues related to the government's regulatory oversight of LTH, as well as its management, governance and financial affairs, particularly in ensuring the institution's long-term operational sustainability amid global economic and geopolitical uncertainties," she said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 15).

Mas Ermieyati said the PAC would recall some of the witnesses who attended Tuesday's proceeding for further clarification, while also calling the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), representatives from the Finance Ministry, agencies under the Prime Minister's Department and Urusharta Jamaah Sdn Bhd.

She said all relevant witnesses would be called before PAC presents its report in the Dewan Rakyat.

Mas Ermieyati added that PAC was finalising several reports, including those on the management of court bail payment services through the e-Jamin system; revenue collection from fees and expenditure at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; the implementation of the national Research, Development, Commercialisation and Innovation programme; and Pelaburan Hartanah Berhad.

"PAC will continue to carry out its check-and-balance role in line with its core function to ensure accountability, particularly for LTH and the government as a whole, while restoring the confidence of millions of depositors in LTH as a leading institution managing the Haj savings of Malaysians," she said. – Bernama
