China flag waving incident: Cops investigating gathering of 400 people waving Jalur Gemilang in Teluk Intan

IPOH: About 400 people from several non-governmental organisations, from PAS and local residents, had gathered in front of the leaning tower of Teluk Intan, with the Perak PAS commissioner delivering a speech.

Perak police chief Datuk Comm Azizi Mat Aris said the gathering took place on Saturday (Oct 26) around 6pm.

He said the police officer stationed at the tower area had informed his superiors of the gathering held without a permit.

“The gathering was held to fly the Jalur Gemilang, to sing patriotic songs, while the state’s PAS commissioner was delivering a speech.

“The police were not informed about the gathering, and due to that the case will be investigated under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” he said in a statement issued on Sunday (Oct 27).

Comm Azizi said those involved would be called to record their statements.

“We are warning and advising the public not to be part of any gathering that can cause disruption and public order.

“Anyone that wishes to hold any sort of gathering must put in their application to the police ten days prior to any event,” he said.

On Saturday, Comm Azizi had said that 16 reports in connection with the China flag-raising incident during a cultural event in Teluk Intan were lodged.

This follows Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria claiming on Friday (Oct 25) that Perak executive council member Woo Kah Leong and Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming were present at the event, after a video of the flag display went viral.

In a separate statement, Woo had demanded that Razman retract his claim that both he and Nga were present at the event and also called on the Gunung Semanggol assemblyman to publicly apologise for spreading misinformation.

Woo had said that Razman’s statement was slanderous and malicious, attempting to link the incident with Nga and him, as neither of them were present at the event.

Nga told reporters at a separate event on Friday that he is mulling taking legal action against Razman for alleged defamation.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Kebudayaan Guan Gong chairman Soon Boon Hua had clarified on its Facebook page that the China flag-raising incident occurred during the Guan Gong Festival on Thursday, and it was unplanned.

He had said that the flags were raised by Chinese nationals, and not by Malaysians.
