Rash of police reports lodged over China flag-waving case

IPOH: Police here said they have received 16 reports linked to the case where China flags were raised during a cultural event in Teluk Intan.

The investigation papers would be handed to the Public Prosecutor’s Office tomorrow, said Perak police chief Datuk Comm Azizi Mat Aris.

Although the organisers had a police permit which was issued on Oct 2, he said they had violated the conditions of the permit by allowing foreigners to take part in the parade.

“It has been clearly stated in the permit that non-citizens are not allowed to participate in the event,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Comm Azizi said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act for violating conditions of the permit, and Section 3(1) of the National Emblems Act for waving foreign flags during the procession.

Persatuan Kebudayaan Guan Gong chairman Soon Boon Hua had posted on Facebook to explain about the incident which happened during an event known as the Guan Gong Festival.

He said the display of China flags were not preplanned and that the flags were raised by Chinese nationals, and not Malaysians.

Videos of the participants holding up the flags during the parade last Thursday had gone viral.

Controversy ensued when Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria claimed last Friday that state executive council member Woo Kah Leong and Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming were present at the event.

Woo issued a statement to dispel Razman’s allegation, describing it as defamatory, and asked that he apologised for spreading misinformation.

Nga told reporters yesterday that he is mulling legal action against Razman.
