Umno leaders believe Najib’s apology to be sincere and noble

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno leaders are backing Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s public apology over the 1MDB scandal, saying this demonstrates the former premier’s sincerity and leadership qualities.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (pic) said the apology highlights Najib’s commitment to prioritising the people’s interests.

“Umno believes this statement comes from Najib’s pure and sincere heart, reflecting his genuine feelings. The party emphasised that Najib was misled by irresponsible parties seeking personal gain and his apology to Malaysians signifies his noble character and unwavering love for the nation.

“Umno and its members hope for justice and the exposure of the true masterminds behind the SRC and 1MDB cases,” Asyraf said.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said Najib’s apology was sincere and he was confident that his remarks reflected good intentions.

“Najib always thought about what was best for the people, to the extent that some irresponsible parties took advantage of his concern for the people’s welfare,” said Wan Rosdy on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Pejuang’s Rafique Rashid questioned whether Najib’s apology was a genuine act of remorse or an attempt to gain sympathy.

He said Najib must now be transparent about the key players involved in the multi-billion ringgit scandal and name all accomplices involved.

Rafique also criticised Najib for using his powers as former premier to “whitewash allegations against him”.

“Najib needs to answer all these questions. If he doesn’t, the public has every right to believe that his apology is merely a strategy to obtain a more comfortable form of detention,” added Rafique.
