Police shoot tyres to halt drug suspect's car in Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: A man's attempt to escape the police with 296g of drugs ended abruptly when officers shot his car tyres during a pursuit here.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the 27-year-old was apprehended by patrol officers in the car park of an apartment on Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir around 6.50pm on Wednesday (Oct 16).

"The patrol unit noticed his erratic driving and followed him. When instructed to stop, he fled leading to a chase," he said.

"The suspect dashed into the apartment's car park, briefly stopping until he saw the police coming closer, which is when he tried to speed away, hitting three cars in his attempt to evade capture. The police responded by shooting the tyres to prevent him from escaping," he added, noting the chase lasted between five to ten minutes and resulted in no injuries.

Comm Kumar delivered these details at a press briefing held during the police monthly assembly at the Johor police headquarters on Thursday (Oct 17).

Upon searching the suspect's vehicle, officers discovered approximately 296g of heroin.

"The suspect has a history of 16 criminal offences and was found positive for drug use" said Comm Kumar, adding that the case is under investigation for multiple violations, including Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
