Two men held, over 450kg of ketum leaves seized

SUBANG JAYA: Police have crippled a ketum distribution syndicate with the arrest of two local men and the seizure of more than 450kg of ketum leaves in an operation here.

Subang Jaya deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Fairus Jaafar said the suspects, aged 34 and 38, were detained at about 6.45pm on Thursday (April 9) by a crime prevention and community safety patrol.

“They were travelling in a car at a rest area along the Elite Highway when they were stopped,” he said in a statement on Friday.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 53 black plastic bags containing about 455kg of ketum leaves, believed to be worth RM18,500.

“The leaves were found in the rear passenger area and are believed to be intended for distribution in the southern region,” he said.

Supt Mohd Fairus added that urine tests on both suspects returned positive for methamphetamine.

“Checks showed one suspect has a criminal record with two offences, while the other has four,” he said.

Both suspects have been remanded for four days from Friday to Monday to assist in investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Police also reaffirmed their commitment to combating illegal distribution activities and urged the public to provide information to aid crime prevention efforts.
