INCOMING Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin plans to focus on people, infrastructure, nature, economy and law enforcement.
The former Ipoh mayor said the core difference between Ipoh and Subang Jaya was the people rather than the infrastructure.
“The way Ipoh and Subang Jaya people think is very different.
“So we need to understand this first before looking into the city’s infrastructure.
“Nature is also a crucial aspect in city management. We need to study the actual causes behind natural disasters like floods.”
Rumaizi said another aspect that required attention was economy, where issues such as urban poverty needed to be addressed.
“We also should ensure all laws governing the city are enforced properly,” he said after his swearing-in ceremony at Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) headquarters yesterday.
It was witnessed by Subang Jaya deputy mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali, who also introduced MBSJ’s councillor lineup to Rumaizi, whose two-year tenure began on Aug 3.
Among his plans for MBSJ is strengthening its finances by exploring new sources of income and optimising existing revenue streams.
“All efforts to increase MBSJ’s income will be implemented innovatively and with integrity to avoid burdening the people.
“We will explore other potential income sources such as investments and public-private partnerships, rather than just focusing on assessment tax.
“Every department in MBSJ is also required to increase its efficiency, reduce wastage, strengthen its governance and optimise the council’s assets,” he said.
Rumaizi aspires to turn Subang Jaya into a smart city which espouses values like integrity, responsibility, fairness and sustainability.
“A smart city is not only about having smart technologies, but also about ensuring that every policy, plan and service we deliver are beneficial to the people and nature.
“I believe a city’s success is not only measured through its physical and technological advancements, but also through its ability to shape a harmonious society, sustainable environment and effective governance.”
