Too early to talk about contesting seats, says KJ

KEPALA BATAS: Khairy Jamaluddin has dismissed speculation that he will contest the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat, saying it is still too early to discuss electoral plans as he is only in the process of rejoining Umno.

The former Umno Youth chief said talk of contesting any seat, including Kepala Batas, was premature and should not be the focus at this stage.

“I think it’s premature for us to talk about which seat I should contest. I’ve only just applied to rejoin Umno,” he said after attending Bertam assemblyman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican's Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Bertam Avenue on Friday (April 10).

He stressed that any decision on candidate placements under Barisan Nasional would be made by its leadership, led by chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

On Kepala Batas, Khairy expressed hope that Bertam assemblyman and former minister Reezal would succeed in reclaiming the parliamentary seat, in line with the wishes of the late former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

“As far as Kepala Batas is concerned, I wish Reezal all the best. I hope he wins back the parliamentary seat,” he said.

Khairy also reiterated that he would take a step-by-step approach regarding his political future, including any potential electoral contests.

In the last general election, Reezal lost to PAS Siti Mastura Muhammad in a four-cornered fight.
