Over 122,000 Year One pupils falling short on literacy, numeracy levels to receive help, says Education Ministry

PUTRAJAYA: More than 122,000 Year One pupils have been identified to undergo literacy and numeracy intervention, the Education Ministry says.

The ministry said its assessment in July had found that over 62,928 out of 122,064 pupils had not met the minimum proficiency in both literacy and numeracy.

Of the 122,064 pupils assessed, 13,669 had not met the minimum numerical proficiency and 45,465 pupils had not reached the minimum literacy proficiency.

Education director-general Azman Adnan said these pupils had begun the three-month intervention programme at their schools in August.

This is after the ministry announced interventions for the curriculum on March 18 including the literacy and numeracy intervention for Year One pupils.
