Couple escapes death after massive tree fell on motorcycle in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A couple escaped death after a massive tree fell on their motorcycle at Jalan Burma on Sunday.

It is learnt that the couple only suffered minor injuries resulting from the incident.

Penang Island City Council on its Facebook page said in the aftermath of the 12.30am incident, the local council’s Rapid Squad team had been sent to the location to cut and remove the fallen tree, clearing the road.

Its Enforcement Department and the police helped control traffic flow and divert vehicles through Jalan Tavoy until all the work was completed.

The operation ended at about 3am and the road was open to motorists as usual.

Falling trees have been quite an occurrence lately.

In May, two men cheated death in Alor Setar after a massive tree fell on their vehicles at Jalan Datuk Kumbar.

Also in May, a huge Angsana tree on the left side of Jalan Macalister was uprooted and fell after a morning downpour.

The tree toppled across the road and crushed another Angsana tree, which then fell into the parking lot's compound, damaging four parked cars.

There was no one at the scene then and no injuries were reported. Both trees are believed to be about 100 years old.

A woman who was in an MPV with her son also miraculously escaped death after the uprooted tree nearly crushed her vehicle as she drove along the road.

In the same month, a man died and two others were injured after a giant tree fell onto Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur resulting in the damage of 17 vehicles.
