Over 19,000 varsity students have joined volunteer police since 2002, says Deputy IGP

BANGI: A total of 19,072 university students have joined the Student Police Volunteer Corps (Suksis) since it was introduced in 2002, says Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police said of the total number, some 1,205 students have gone on to join the police force as cadet inspectors.

"We give priority to Suksis members when accepting a new intake for cadet inspectors in the police force as they have already undergone basic police training including handling weapons and equipment," he said.

Ayob Khan said this at a press conference after attending the Suksis graduation ceremony for 840 students at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on Saturday (Sept 7).

The Suksis training also includes certain aspects that cadet inspectors also go through, he said.

"Among them is training under the General Operations Force (GOF) as well as on the relevant laws. Thus, it is an advantage for them (Suksis) should they apply to join the police force (as cadet inspectors)," he said.

At the graduation ceremony, Ayob Khan said the 840 students were from 17 public universities.

"They have done well after undergoing training. Currently, a total of 2,296 students in Suksis are undergoing basic training," he said.

For UKM, a total of 955 students have joined Suksis since 2004, he added.
