Only 1.76% of Sarawak teachers master advanced tech skills

SIBU: Only about 1.76% of teachers in Sarawak have achieved an advanced level of technology proficiency.

State Education Department director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad said the data, sourced from the Education Ministry's digital integration in education assessment, included feedback from all teachers, including district education officers, headmasters and principals, including himself.

The assessment, conducted in stages throughout 2022, revealed that out of the 360,000 participants, approximately 25% were at a basic level, while 74% were at an intermediate level.

"Based on this data, the Education Department will conduct training to enhance teachers' digital integration skills," Azhar said at the Sibu district education office's excellent service award ceremony 2023 on Friday (Aug 9).

He said it was understood that the Education Ministry will allocate funds for this digital training initiative.

"More digital-related programmes and training will be held after this to empower our teachers with technology," he said.

Although the ministry has high hopes to see teachers become literate in technology, Azhar reassured teachers not to be discouraged as they will receive the necessary training.

"Embracing technology is crucial for effectively educating our students.

"It is an essential part of our development, and we must prepare ourselves with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in our duties," he added.

During the ceremony, a total of 361 recipients, including educators and executive group members in Sibu district, received their awards presented by Azhar.
