KOTA KINABALU: Former chief minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has been sentenced to five weeks' jail for contempt of court over his remarks regarding the ongoing Zara Qairina Mahathir death inquest on Wednesday (July 29).
Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan set the verdict to be executed immediately for the Parti Warisan president and Semporna MP, after he was convicted of the offence.
He, however, granted Shafie's application for a stay of execution pending a High Court appeal against the decision.
Shafie was issued with a show cause letter on Sept 22, 2025, in relation to remarks he made during the 'Jelajah Inspirasi DSSA P187 Kinabatangan' event on Sept 20, where he allegedly questioned the lengthy duration of the inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina, among other things.
