Azmin claims police investigation against him tantamount to intimidation

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Azmin Ali will seek a judicial review of the police's decision to summon him for questioning over his remarks made at the state assembly about the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) and the administration of the state government.

The Selangor Opposition chief said he was issued a notice under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code and was summoned to appear at the Shah Alam police district headquarters to give a statement over his remarks.

"I have instructed my lawyers to file an application for judicial review to challenge the wrongful act of the police in issuing the notice.

"I am also calling for a stop to any current or future investigation or action against state assemblymen," Azmin said during a press conference at Perikatan Nasional's headquarters here on Monday (May 20).

Azmin said that he was merely performing his duties as an assemblyman and Opposition leader when he made the remarks at the state assembly.

He noted that Section 2 of the Selangor Constitution guarantees immunity for anything said during state assembly proceedings.

"Such freedom can not be challenged or disputed in any court or tribunal," he said.

"It clearly contravenes both federal and state constitutions. It is also an attempt to intimidate me as a member of the state assembly and Opposition leader.

"This is an affront to democracy," he said.

In March, Azmin had said that PKNS was in the red and that its income from 2018 to 2022 came from the sale of buildings and land, as well as privatisation exercises.

Additionally, he also asked the state government to explain PKNS' move to sell development rights of PJ Sentral, which was expected to give Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) a return of RM1.04bil with a value of RM270mil.
