JOHOR BARU: A 22-year-old law student has been fined by the Sessions’ Court after pleading guilty to letting her bank account be used as a mule account for illegal transactions.
Nicole Soo Lik Yee pleaded guilty to dishonestly helping a 32-year-old male victim to transfer RM525 into her bank account on Jalan Idaman 8/10, Taman Nusa Idaman at 4.31pm on June 13.
She was charged on Friday (Aug 14) under Section 424 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to five years or a fine, or both upon conviction.
National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer K. Bharathi, who represented Soo, asked the court to hand out a lighter sentence as the accused is currently pursuing law at a private college in Petaling Jaya.
She said Soo is also supported by her grandfather as her parents are separated.
Sessions Judge Madihah Zainol ordered Soo to pay a fine of RM500 in default one month’s jail.
Deputy public prosecutor Shamira Mohd Luthfi Ismail prosecuted the case.
