GEORGE TOWN: The state DAP has not adopted an official position on a motion calling for the party to leave Cabinet, says Chow Kon Yeow.
The DAP central executive committee memeber said the decision would instead be left to delegates at the DAP convention on Sunday (Aug 16).
Chow, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said Penang delegates have been briefed on the motions to be debated and voted on at the convention.
“Each state has its own way of approaching the convention that will take place this Sunday.
“For Penang, the state committee met last Wednesday (Aug 5) and we took an open approach,” he said during a press conference held at his office in Komtar, to announce a new American manufacturing company building its facility in Penang on Friday (Aug 14).
Chow said Penang DAP did not take an official state position.
He said the motion specifically concerned a proposal for DAP to leave Cabinet while continuing to support the unity government.
“The motion concerns whether DAP will leave the Cabinet but continue to support the unity government.
"That is the motion,” he said.
It was reported earlier this week that the DAP convention on Sunday (Aug 16) will decide whether the party will remain in or withdraw from the Federal Government for the remainder of the current parliamentary term
DAP national organising secretary Khoo Poay Tiong said the motion on the matter would be tabled by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke at the convention held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
He said a total of 4,264 delegates from 1,704 eligible branches would decide on the motion through a ballot.
Earlier, Chow welcomed a leading global medtech company (Intuitive) that will be investing about RM2bil over five years in its first facility in Penang.
Its executive vice-president and chief manufacturing and supply chain officer Mark Brosius said the new facility, covering 316,000 sq ft, will begin operations in 2028.
“The initial cost of phase one for the land and building will cost about US$200mil (RM817mil) but over a five-year period, including operations, investment should reach around US$500mil (RM2bil).
"The new facility is expected to create 1,200 highly skilled jobs by 2032.
"The new facility will expand the company’s global manufacturing footprint to support the increasing demand across Asia Pacific," he said.
