PONTIAN: The police have seized more than 8kg of drugs worth close to RM1mil in a series of raids here.
Pontian OCPD Supt Hadzrat Hussien Mion Hussain said the operation was launched at around 9.30pm on Tuesday (Aug 11) following the arrest of a 36-year-old local man, who is believed to have acted as a runner for a drug syndicate.
“The first raid was at a house in Taman Megah where we found 14 packets containing 410.02g of ecstasy powder, a packet with 19.17g of syabu, 30 Erimin 5 pills weighing 9.22g and three ecstasy pills weighing 1.93g.
“We then raided a hotel in the same area where we uncovered six packets containing 231.71g of ecstasy powder, a packet with 16.10g of syabu and a packet with 8.56g of ketamine.
“The third raid was at a homestay in Pekan Nanas where we seized 50 packets of ecstasy powder weighing about 1.5kg, a packet with 50.61g of ketamine, 20 Erimin 5 pills weighing 6.12g and three plastic containers containing 5.96kg of MDMA powder,” he said in a statement here.
Supt Hadzrat Hussien said the seized drugs, weighing about 8.21kg and worth about RM921,022, could feed the addiction of 27,455 users.
“We believe that the suspect is a runner who was involved in getting customers for the syndicate, which is believed to have been active since April this year.
“The syndicate's modus operandi was to rent homestays and hotel rooms to store drugs before distributing them to the local market.
“Investigations are ongoing to track down the remaining members of the syndicate,” he said, adding that police also seized a car and RM500 in cash.
He added that a preliminary urine test found the suspect positive for methamphetamine, while checks also showed previous drug-related offences.
He said the suspect had been remanded for seven days from Wednesday (Aug 12) until Tuesday (Aug 18), and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
