‘Stop fires of racism from spreading’

IPOH: The majority of Malaysians are rational, moderate, and place an emphasis on harmony and peace, says the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah.

“His Royal Highness also gives his assurance of providing support and protection to all Malaysians of diverse races and religions in a fair manner,” said Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Dr Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin.

The Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja added that this was so that every citizen can continue to live in harmony and peace by working together to build and develop a peaceful and prosperous Malaysia.

Sultan Nazrin also voiced concern over the rise in tensions following the Molotov cocktail attack on a KK Super Mart outlet in Bidor recently, and wanted stern action to prevent the spread of racial incitement.

The Ruler had been informed of the incident by the police and had requested that the matter be given serious attention, Mohd Zahidi said in a statement yesterday.

“His Royal Highness described the initial act that occurred as a worrying sign that should be given serious attention through decisive action so that the fires of racism are immediately contained and prevented from spreading,” he added.

On a related matter, the Office of the Sultan of Perak lodged a police report on Thursday over a social media post that misused a speech delivered by Sultan Nazrin 19 years ago.

The report was over a racially-charged statement titled “Amanah Membina Negara” that took the Perak Ruler’s speech out of context, said Mohd Zahidi.

The over 5,700-word speech had been delivered when Sultan Nazrin was the Raja Muda of Perak, at the Second Malay Education Congress on March 27, 2005 in Kuala Lumpur.

In the speech, Sultan Nazrin analysed several factors that made Malays strong and weak while emphasising how important it was for the community to be mentally liberated and independent and be enriched with positive values, said Mohd Zahidi.

Throughout Sultan Nazrin’s address, the Ruler did not at all express any incitement against any community in Malaysia, he added.

“It is believed that there are parties who choose to fan the flames of racism and religious issues to the point of taking Sultan Nazrin’s address out of context.

“In order to protect the good name of the Sultan of Perak from being tarnished by any party for their own agenda, the Office of the Sultan of Perak has filed a police report,” he said.
