SHAH ALAM: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was gifted the Keris Jubli Perak specially crafted to commemorate His Royal Highness’s 25th year on the Selangor throne.

According to a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page yesterday, the ceremonial keris was specially commissioned as an expression of Sultan Sharafuddin’s deep appreciation for the art, heritage and diverse traditions associated with the Malay keris.

In a Bernama report, the keris was described as being meticulously crafted to reflect the significance and uniqueness of the Sultan of Selangor’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Among the skilled artisans and craftsmen involved in the making of this historic keris were Datuk Dr Abdul Muati Zamri Ahmad, Datuk Wan Burhanuddin Wan Hassan and Datuk Mohamed Raffe Chekku, with the project led by Rafulin Foundation.

“The entire production process took 12 months, with each component crafted meticulously and in detail,” read the post.

The Keris Jubli Perak is a symbolic work that chronicles Sultan Sharafuddin’s reign through the art of Malay heritage.

“Every material, measurement and decorative element carries its own meaning, reflecting the journey of the Sultan’s reign and the identity of Selangor.

“The keris measures 25 inches (63.5cm) in length to commemorate 25 years of His Royal Highness’ reign, while the use of seven types of iron symbolises the unity of strength. The White Eagle element represents courage and authority,” added the post.

The keris also incorporates black healing wood as a symbol linking Malay heritage with traditional beliefs, while buffalo horn represents resilience and the refinement of craftsmanship.

Black healing wood typically refers to South-East Asian wood like kayu kemuning hitam and penawar hitam.

In addition, nine gemstones are inlaid into the keris to represent the nine districts of Selangor.

“Twenty-five chevron-shaped motifs symbolise and commemorate the journey of His Royal Highness’ reign, spanning the past and present while carrying hopes for the future,” according to the post.

The making of the keris also reflects the richness of Malay heritage and the dedication of the artisans in preserving and elevating the traditional art of keris craftsmanship for future generations.
