Ipoh white coffee in global top 10 best coffee list

KUALA LUMPUR: Ipoh white coffee has been voted one of the best coffees in the world.

According to culinary travel guide portal TasteAtlas, the coffee came in 10th on the list of Top 39 Coffees in the World, released on March 15, beating popular ones like Vietnamese coffee, espresso and even dalgona.

“Contrary to its name, it is not white.

“The name stems from the roasting technique in which coffee beans are lightly roasted in margarine before they are ground and brewed.

“The origin of this roasting style is usually associated with Hainanese migrants in Malaysia, who adapted the classic technique to create a beverage that has a milder, lightly caramelised coffee flavour,” the portal said in an introduction to the coffee, which originated in Ipoh, Perak.

It continues to say: “Ipoh white coffee is usually enriched with condensed milk and should have a light froth on top.

“It should not be mistaken with the general term ‘white coffee’, which may refer to any coffee served with the addition of milk or creamer.”

The Greek espresso freddo made the top spot in the list, with two other Greek coffee making the top 10 list -- freddo cappuccino (No. 4) and frappe coffee (No.9).

The others on the list are cafe cubano (Cuba), cafe bombon (Spain), Indian filter coffee, Turkish coffee as well as cappuccino and ristretto from Italy.

TasteAtlas food rankings are based on the ratings of its audience, with a series of mechanisms that recognise real users.

For this list of top coffees, a total of 3,878 ratings were recorded, of which 2,559 were recognised as legitimate.
