Hotel staff crafts Mei Hua tree from discarded cellophane and wrapping paper

MELAKA: It took four days for hotel staff to create an artificial "Mei Hua" (plum blossom) by using recycled materials as a decoration for the Lunar New Year.

The front-office manager of Shah Beach Resort here, T.S Dinesh, used fallen tree branches and discarded Xerox paper strips to create the 1.65cm tall tree now displayed at the hotel's entrance.

"The tree is significant with Chinese New Year, and my bosses wished to have one displayed at the hotel," he said on Monday (Jan 5).

Dinesh said he learned the art of making the tree online and worked on it after completing his routine tasks at the hotel.

"This is my first attempt to create the tree using discarded cellophane, foil wrapping paper and ribbons.

"I collected the branches from the hotel's garden to create the tree in four days," said the 27-year-old.

Dinesh said he had also created other flower artworks to be part of the Chinese New Year decoration for the hotel.

"I have also invited my relatives who are celebrating the Chinese New Year to view my first attempt to make the tree," he added.
