Couple killed in collision with suspected drunk driver, say cops


KUALA LUMPUR: A married couple on a motorcycle were killed after they were rear-ended by a car driven by a man suspected of being under the influence of alcohol in an incident at Jalan Ampang near Menara Great Eastern here early Saturday (May 2).

Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the accident occurred at about 5.34am and involved a motorcycle and a car.

“Preliminary investigations found that the car driven by a 24-year-old local man is believed to have lost control before crashing into the rear of a motorcycle carrying the couple.

“The 61-year-old male rider sustained severe head injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene. His 56-year-old wife also suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

He added that the car driver sustained head injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the red zone at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

A 23-year-old front passenger also suffered head injuries and remains under treatment, while a 24-year-old rear passenger, who sustained injuries to his lips and tongue, has been discharged and has since lodged a police report to assist investigations.

He said all the individuals in the car were friends.

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said blood and urine samples have been taken from the driver and will be sent to the Chemistry Department to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
