Employers in a bind over maid work permit renewals

PETALING JAYA: Employers of maids are in a bind as they are unable to renew their work permits using the MyEG service platform and have to wait in long queues at Immigration Department offices instead.

Derrick, a senior executive from Subang Jaya, said he waited for three hours at the Selangor Immigration Department's headquarters in Shah Alam in June this year, only to be told he could not renew his maid's permit.

"I got there at about 8.30am. There was already a long queue and there was only one counter operating.

"When it was my turn at about 11.30am, the lady at the counter told me I could not renew my maid's permit due to an error in her date of birth in her Foreign Workers Medical Examination Monitoring Agency (Fomema) health records. I was told I had to go to Fomema to rectify the error," he said.

Derrick said he had been happy with the MyEG service, which he used during the pandemic for permit renewals.

"I cannot use it now. It used to be so efficient. It is ridiculous, having to waste so much time and effort," he said, adding that it used to be much easier to renew his maid's permit in the past.

He also said the Immigration office should open more counters to assist employers who need to renew their workers' permits.

Derrick, who has had a domestic helper since 2005, said he resorted to getting help from an agent.

"I had to pay him RM300 on top of the RM610 I paid for the one-year permit and levy," he said.
