Pneumonia identified as cause of detainee's death in Langkawi lock-up


PETALING JAYA: Pneumonia has been identified as the cause of death of a detainee in an Alor Setar lock-up, says Bukit Aman.

Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Azri Ahmad said that a post-mortem examination Was conducted on the victim in Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar, Kedah on Dec 17.

He said that the examination showed no injuries from foul play.

"The cause of death has been confirmed as pneumonia. This death in custody has now been classified as 'sudden death'," he said In a statement on Monday (Dec 18).

Comm Azri added that the criminal investigation unit on deaths in custody (USJKT) will continue their investigations before handing over their findings to the coroner.

On Dec 12, a 34-year-old woman arrested for drugs Act was remanded at the Kuah police station.

She complained that she was not feeling well at night on Dec 15 and was taken to Hospital Sultanah Maliha in Langkawi.

However, she was pronounced dead by doctors at 7.30am the next day.
