PM secures RM63bil trade deals, attracts investment buzz for M’sia

SAN FRANCISCO: Several Muslim businessmen and technology experts based here have expressed interest to invest in Malaysia, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar in a Facebook post said this was relayed to him during his meetings with them.

Among them are SpaceX Commercial Marketing director Omar Kunbargi, Rembrand chief executive officer Omar Tawakol, Ornovi chief executive officer Fauad Hassan, Z2Data president and chief executive officer Mohammad Ahmad and Whizz System president Muhammad Irfan.

Anwar said the businessmen had stated their interest after getting clarifications and insights on the country‘s future direction.

He said aside from the area of artificial intelligence, their discussions also touched on the importance of education and the aerospace industry.

“We also discussed Muslims in the United States as well as the situation affecting Palestinians. They stated their support and appreciation on Malaysia’s firm stance on the suffering of Palestinians,” he said.

On another matter, the Prime Minister also said Malaysia secured investments of RM63.02bil from the trade and investment mission to the United States.

Of this amount, RM8.33bil were from trade and investment missions organised before the start of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) while the remaining were from one-on-one meetings which Anwar held while in San Francisco.

Investments for this trade mission were from, among others, Abbott Laboratories, Mondelez International, Amsted Rail, Hematogenix, PerkinElmer, Ford Motor Company, Boeing, Amazon Web Services, Enovix and Lam Research.

“The remaining investments were secured from meetings held with tech giants such as Google, Enovix Corporation, Microsoft, TikTok and TPG,” he said.

On his meeting with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, Anwar said they exchanged views on the issue of Palestine, where the latter stated the need to protect the people and to tackle the humanitarian crisis.

He said they agreed that the conflict should serve as a reminder to the international community on the need to end the Israel occupation based on a two state solution.
