Newborn baby abandoned in front of KK mosque

KOTA KINABALU: A newborn baby girl has been left abandoned in front of a mosque on Jalan Maktab Gaya, Luyang here.

A note was also found with the baby, pleading for the child to be taken care of and placed in a foster home.

"I am sorry for not being able to care for this child. Due to my situation I am unable to care and provide for the child. Thank you so much," read the note.

The mosque's imam, Adzwan Eman, 28, said he had just pulled up in his car with his wife and children at 9pm on Sunday (Nov 5) when he heard some noise.

He said he tracked down the source of the noise and noticed a box.

"I was shocked to see a baby wrapped in cloth in the box. I immediately carried the baby into the mosque," Adzwan said.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdulah said based on the note, the baby was born on Oct 31.

"The child has been sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a check-up and further observation.

"The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a child under the age of 12," he added.

He urged those with information on the matter to contact the Insp Hatikah Ahmad at 016-833 7246 or the nearest police station.
