Bersatu surprised by Labuan MP’s decision

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu was caught off-guard when another of its MPs decided to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, says party youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

This is because Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman’s (pic) move had come out of the blue unlike that of Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid.

“We were in the dark. The Kuala Kangsar MP met with the president, deputy president and secretary-general first. That was how we got to know about the blackmails,” he told The Star.

“In the case of the Labuan MP, we didn’t know head or tail. It was out of the blue,” he said when met in Parliament.

Wan Ahmad Fayshal, who is also Machang MP, said he expects the party to issue a show-cause letter to Suhaili.

“The standard operating procedure would be similar to that of Iskandar Dzulkarnain’s case. However, let’s wait for the official statement from the party,” he added.Suhaili is the second MP from Bersatu to declare his support for the unity government led by Anwar. On Monday, Suhaili said his decision was because Labuan and its people had been “suffering for years” due to the rising cost of living and unresolved issues on the island.

Iskandar Dzulkarnain, who expressed his support to the unity government on Oct 12, denied allegations that he did so to avoid corruption charges. The next day, Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin alleged that Iskandar Dzulkarnain was being pressured to support the government.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has refuted Hamzah’s accusations and the latter has not been able to provide any proof despite being asked to do so by the Prime Minister.
