RM2.4bil for social welfare and hardcore poor


PETALING JAYA: Several provisions to help the B40 community were announced under Budget 2024.

Among them, the Social Welfare Department will receive RM2.4bil to assist some 450,000 people including the hardcore poor, senior citizens, children and the disabled.

The government will also continue to provide free driving tests for those taking Class B2 motorcycle, ehailing and taxis licences.

Over 40,000 youth from low-income families will benefit from this.

In addition, 100,000 free helmets will be distributed to motorcyclists and riders, including children.

Subsidised flight tickets under FLYsiswa will also be continued for almost 60,000 students. The initiative aims to help university students flying domestically between Sabah, Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan to return to their hometowns and get back to the varsities for a new semester.

The Human Resource Development Corporation will allocate 15% of its total levy collection for the Madani training programme to reskill vulnerable groups, including the disabled, the elderly and retirees as well as ex-convicts.

The rebate on electricity bills of up to RM40 monthly for hardcore poor households would also be carried on with an allocation of RM55mil.

Next year, RM500mil will be set aside to increase participation in the People’s Income Initiative (IPR) to supplement the income of the underprivileged group.
