The bulk of the budget for Malaysia Games (Sukma) Selangor 2026 will be allocated for technical requirements, competition equipment and games management system.
State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said that of Sukma’s RM49.9mil operating budget, RM27.4mil was allocated for these purposes.
“Another RM10mil has been set aside for accommodation, meals and subsidies for participating contingents; RM7.5mil for the 22nd Sukma secretariat; RM2mil for facilities and venue preparation and RM1mil for transportation.
“About RM500,000 has been allocated each for health and emergency services, volunteers and technical officials, promotion and media, as well as security and traffic control,” he said during the Selangor State Assembly at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam yesterday.
He was replying to Noor Najhan Mohamad Salleh (PN-Sementa) on the cost, funding sources, and economic benefits of hosting the games.
“The secretariat will cap administrative costs at RM3mil, channelling the bulk of funds directly into competition standards and athletes’ welfare,” he said.
Mohd Najwan said spreading the competitions across nine districts would boost economic benefits for communities throughout Selangor.
“Local councils will provide temporary trading spaces near competition venues for food and beverage operators, homestay providers and other local entrepreneurs.
“This will allow traders to generate additional income while promoting products, culture and attractions of their respective districts,” he added.
On a related matter, Mohd Najwan said no new facilities were built for Sukma.
“We are focusing on upgrading existing facilities.
“For example, Shah Alam Aquatic Centre received one of the biggest facelifts costing RM40mil, while RM7mil to RM8mil was spent upgrading the Subang shooting range complex.”
He said Selangor local authorities had collectively injected between RM50mil and RM70mil to upgrade facilities hosting both Sukma and Para Sukma 2026.
This expenditure is intended to provide the state with improved public sporting assets after the events.
The state also slashed Sukma’s operating expenditure by about 75%, from more than RM203mil to RM49.9mil.
In response to a supplementary question from Izuan Ahmad Kasim (PH-Kota Damansara) on federal funding, Mohd Najwan said the Federal Government did not channel any funds for Sukma.
“The RM50mil came from the state government, while almost RM8mil was obtained through sponsorships.
“Official celebrations will be kept modest, with the opening ceremony and parade at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam on Aug 15,” he said.
This event will involve athletes from both Sukma and Para Sukma, with each contingent limited to 45 participants.
Selangor has set a goal of winning 80 gold medals at Sukma 2026, an increase from its 56-gold haul at the 2024 edition in Sarawak.
