DBKL begins clearing up clutter outside PPR apartments

SEVERAL families living in PPR Pekan Kepong and PPR Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur had a surprise visit recently when enforcement officers from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) turned up following complaints of obstructed public spaces outside their units.

These families saw their belongings like tables, chairs and cupboards confiscated by the authorities under the Public Housing (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) By-laws 2000.

A DBKL officer told StarMetro that the operation called Pindah Halangan (Remove Obstacles) enforcement will continue on a regular basis, hence he warned residents to remove their belongings that are left outside their units or face the consequences.

“Remove it, or we will remove it for you and it’s not going to be cheap,’’ said an officer when contacted.

“Apart from cluttering the corridors with unwanted things, some residents even used the PPR’s store rooms and riser room as their personal storage space. This is silly and dangerous. The riser room is off limits; it is meant for the fire protection system,’’ added the officer.

He said that a cluttered corridor can be dangerous especially during an emergency like a fire as the obstructions can prevent or delay the fire department from acting quickly.

The officer added that there have been many altercations between the residents due to the selfish nature of some, and he hoped people would be more understanding about sharing public spaces.
