KUCHING: The Sarawak government will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) to pave the way for a seamless takeover of MASwings Sdn Bhd.

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this was decided during a meeting between both parties at MAB Academy in Petaling Jaya on Monday (July 24).

"Through this comprehensive MOU, both parties can commence in-depth discussions, establish clear parameters, define the scopes, set timelines and ensure a streamlined process for the acquisition of MASwings," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 25).

Lee, who led the Sarawak delegation to the meeting, said its objective was to kick off discussions with MAG on the acquisition of MASwings by the state government.

He said it was a follow-up to an earlier meeting with MAG's main shareholder Khazanah Nasional Bhd on July 7 and the MOU signing on the acquisition of rural air services (RAS) between the state and federal governments on July 20.

"During the meeting, both parties reached an agreement to ensure a smooth acquisition process without disrupting the operation of RAS," Lee said.

He added that the Federal Government had given assurance through the July 20 MOU that it would continue to subsidise RAS and promote socioeconomic activities in rural areas.

Among those in the Sarawak delegation were state Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, state Attorney General Datuk Seri Talat Mahmood, deputy state secretary (economic planning and development) Datuk Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel and state Economic Planning Unit director Lester Matthew.

MAG was represented by group chief executive officer Datuk Izham Ismail, group chief strategy and transformation officer Bryan Foong, MASwings chief operating officer Suresh Singam and senior officers.
